About ELA in Visitation Academy

Welcome to Middle School ELA in Visitation Academy! In grades 5-8, students are exploring their love of literature and beginning to examine the importance of reading and writing to their future academic careers.

In 5th grade, students  focus on their reading and writing skills. Students are beginning to interpret and analyze the text on their own, focusing on the different literary devices authors use in their writing. For their writing skills, students are beginning to challenge themselves with responding to literature in their writing.

In the 6th grade, students are continuing to improve their reading and writing skills. They are encouraged to interpret and analyze the text on their own with targeted questioning and writing assignments. For their writing skills, students will begin to focus their writing in essay formats to begin preparing them for 7th grade expectations. Through guided instruction and modeling, students will begin to prepare for the 6th grade state exam

In the 7th grade, students are challenged with their reading and writing. Students are asked to analyze texts independently, and creatively interpret their work. Students write more literary analysis essays responding to the literature. This work will prepare them for the 8th grade.

In the 8th grade, students are preparing for high school, specifically with essay writing. Students focus on their writing skills which will aid them in all subjects. The types of writing include: literary analysis papers and research papers. Students will leave the 8th grade prepared to read and write for high school level material.
